39th CENTR Technical workshop - We broke a record!

Blog 19-10-2018

By Ulrich Wisser (.se), co-chair of the CENTR Technical Working Group – This year, the moon and the stars were aligned, and we managed to co-locate the DNS-OARC and CENTR-Tech meetings. We had wanted to do this for a long time, but somehow there was always something getting in the way. As a bonus, we even got together right before the RIPE77 meeting.

This gave CENTR-Tech a record participation. We had 81 participants from 38 CENTR members.

We broke a record!

The joint CENTR-Tech and DNS-OARC workshop started with a CENTR-only session, with 24 CENTR members presenting their achievements and major projects over the last 6 months. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to delve deeper into any of the presented topics. CENTR members have been busy and done some amazing work. We will bring this to the next workshop and ask everyone to present their work in more depth.

Jaromír Talíř’s term as co-chair ended with this workshop, but members seem to be happy with the work he has done, and he was re-elected with roaring applause.

After the CENTR-only session the workshop proceeded with the joint session for CENTR and DNS-OARC members. Over the next one and a half days we were thankful to hear many very interesting presentations.

ICANN’s presentation of the Root KSK Rollover could have been more detailed. There were some minor glitches, but overall everything went as expected. ICANN did an impressive job with its outreach to even the most well-hidden crannies of the internet.

Afnic presented their security work and many participants could only applaud Afnic on how far they have come in their disaster preparations. One interesting point made during the following discussion was about the time it takes to solve DNS errors. This has implications on how to reach a TLD operator even outside office hours, how fast a zone can be updated, and which procedures and policies are in place.

Another highlight of the workshop was Sara Dickinson’s presentation on DNS Privacy. She gave an overview of the different techniques and some intended and unintended consequences.

Overall CENTR contributed to the workshop with presentations from three members, two associate members and two observers. You can find the slides on the DNS-OARC website.

This CENTR-Tech workshop was a great success with a record engagement from our members, many of whom actually paid the DNS-OARC attendance fee instead of using the free CENTR seats. It seems we have found a cooperation that is highly valued by our members.

All in all, this was a really good workshop, and we as co-chairs would like to do a joint workshop again in the future. A possible improvement though, would be to allocate more time for the CENTR-only session and for more CENTR-related content at the joint session.

Finally, we would like to thank Linda for making the organisation work, DNS-OARC for the cooperation and last but not least all our members who contributed to this success.
