CENTR discusses post-IANA life, NIS implementation and membership updates at its 56th General Assembly

News 10-10-2016

Last week, CENTR held its 56th General Assembly in Belgrade, Serbia. More than 70 attendees discussed the consequences of the IANA stewardship transition for ccTLDs, analysed the impact and opportunities of the upcoming implementation of the NIS directive, agreed on the 2017 CENTR strategy and budget, and were briefed on a wide range of updates from the membership.

The main take away from the IANA discussion is that IANA customers in the future will even have a better view on IANA performance metrics and can expect an even faster implementation of change requests in the absence of the need to get NTIA approval.

In the context of the upcoming implementation of the NIS directive, three members presented what they have already implemented to ensure better security, including security certification, audit processes and voluntary reporting tools.

The CENTR 2017 strategy will deliver the same high quality services to members, but will have a slight change in focus towards EU Policy work and market analysis. The former will mean that CENTR will go further in assessing the operational impact of EU legislative measures, but also signals a move towards more proactive work in Brussels. The latter will help the members to further study the market changes through extended data sets.

The group also discussed the CENTR long-term meeting strategy, in particular new meeting formats and tools to improve interaction.

As usual, one of the sessions was dedicated to external updates where the European Commission, the IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group, ICANN and the ccNSO provided ccTLD-focused updates. These updates are crucial to make sure CENTR and its members remain in touch with the wider industry and are aware of the need and opportunity for them to engage with these organisations.

We would like to thank our generous Serbian hosts for perfect meeting facilities and the warm hospitality!
