Interview with Ionut-Eugen Sandu, new CENTR liaison for the .ro Registry

News 02-11-2016

Ionut-Eugen Sandu is Head of RoTLD Technical Department and new CENTR liaison for the .ro Registry. In this interview, he shares his views on the future of the registry and his strategic priorities.

Can you tell us a bit more about your background?

My name is Ionut-Eugen Sandu and I am 44 years old. I graduated from "Hyperion" University in Bucharest, Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science. I work as a Network Administrator at the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics, RoTLD Department, since 1 October 2003.

Since 6 January 2013, I am the Head of the RoTLD Technical Service. Currently, I'm doing doctoral studies at the "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu, Faculty of Economics, Department of Management, on "Security Solutions regarding the Administration of the .RO Top Level Domain Names".

In your view, what are the current challenges of the RoTLD registry?

RoTLD Department is split into two divisions, namely:

  • Technical Service - consisting of programmers-developers of applications for the administration of .RO domain names, and also network and computer systems administrators.
  • The second division is the Administrative Service - consisting of staff that reviews domain names' transfer and deletion requests, manages contracts with partners and deals with legal aspects of RoTLD activity.

Earlier this year, RoTLD implemented DNSSEC, specifications demanded by entities directly concerned with the administration of internet domains in Romania, the Internet Society and .ro domain users.

Taking into account the scientific and technological developments in IT and the speed at which these developments are succeeding, I think that maintaining a safe environment at the Registry together with the perpetual updating of hardware and software infrastructure should be considered as top priorities. At the same time, we need to continually respond to requests received from customers and partners.

What will be your priorities in 2017? Any big changes planned for the coming year?

Currently, we are working on developing an application for managing simultaneously multiple domain names registered to the same user/entity. Considering the responsibility we bear by administering the .ro registry, we need to maintain the safety levels both on networks and applications. RoTLD support the idea of introducing a yearly maintenance fee and intends to conduct an impact study and analysis, making all necessary registry preparations for the moment such measure will come into effect.

What are the top three topics you would like to discuss with other CENTR members?

1. On 6 July 2016 we implemented DNSSEC in our Registry. Today, we have 891,000 domain names and 173 DNSSEC signed domains. How can a Registry increase the number of DNSSEC signed domains?

2. Another subject that is important for me is the Registry's Security.

3. What can a registry do in case of fraudulent usage a domain name?
