Lawyers be lawyers: another full agenda for the ccTLD legal community

News 14-02-2017

CENTR's Legal and Regulatory working group met on 2 and 3 February in Ljubljana, Slovenia. As usual, the group had an interesting and plentiful agenda.

Two issues stood out and gave a good indication of what is on ccTLD (legal) minds these days: deletions or blocking of domains for reasons related to the content of websites and issues related to privacy and data protection. In particular, the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires the attention of the registry lawyers. It will need a tremendous effort to get all requirements implemented by the deadline of 25 May 2018.

This meeting was also the last one of outgoing Chair Stephan Welzel (DENIC), which had been chairing the L&R Working Group for 15 years. His achievements are too many to list, but were properly recognised by a long ovation. Ann-Cathrin Marcussen (Norid) was appointed as Chair and Maarten Simon (SIDN) as Vice-Chair.
